What does eyelid surgery aim to restore?
Eyelid surgery aims to rejuvenate the eye by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle in addition to reenforcing weakened support structures. The effect is to transform tired appearing, baggy, poorly defined eyes into crisper, refreshed, and alert youthful eyes. View eyelid surgery photos.
What can you tell me about the procedure and incisions?
Upper Eyelids
The upper eyelid incision is well camouflaged in the natural fold and contour of the upper eyelid through which excess fat, skin, and muscle are removed. The procedure is one hour in length and is performed as an outpatient basis in an accredited day surgery center using local and sedation.
Lower Eyelids
The lower eyelid incision is well concealed in the lash line of the lower eyelid through which excess fat, skin, and muscle are removed. In addition, a lax lower lid can be tightened through this incision. If you only need to have excess fat removed, this can be performed through the inner eyelid without an external incision. The procedure is one hour in length and is performed as an outpatient basis in an accredited day surgery center using local and sedation.
How do I know if I would benefit from an upper eyelid or lower eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery must be tailored to each individual, depending on your concerns and the condition of your eyelids. For example, some people need to only have their upper eyelids improved, while others only desire an improvement in their lower eyelids, and some need to have both improved. Similarly, some patients need only skin removed, some fat, and some both. Dr. Awada will provide you with a free consultation that includes a complete facial evaluation and help you determine what is required to achieve your desired youthful look.
What should I anticipate about the recovery?
Expect to have minimal discomfort that improves in a few days and is well controlled by oral medication. The majority of eyelid swelling and bruising will resolve in 7-10 days and can be camouflaged by makeup to allow a return to light work and social activity. However, strenuous exercise and activity (including sex) is not recommended for 3 weeks. Plan on not being able to wear your contact lenses or drive for 3-7 days.
What are some important risks that I need to be aware of?
As with any other surgical procedure, eyelid surgery has potential risks. Although extremely infrequent, the risks of the procedure will be discussed in great detail during your consultation. These include but are not limited to the following: infection, bleeding, temporary blurred vision, temporary corneal irritation due to abrasion, pulling down of the lower lids due to scarring, and tightness or inability to completely close the eyes.
What other tips do I need to be aware of?
Insurance will not pay for lower eyelid surgery since it is purely cosmetic. However, if you have a peripheral visual obstruction due to hanging skin from your upper eyelids, this may qualify you for coverage of your upper eyelid surgery by your insurance company. Dr. Awada will be glad to consult with you and obtain the appropriate information necessary for your insurance company’s determination.
Can I have an upper eyelid surgery performed with a lower eyelid surgery?
Both surgeries can be performed together if needed. Further, many patients chose to have eyelid rejuvenation performed in conjunction with a forehead lift and/or a face lift to achieve a harmonious youthful facial appearance. Dr. Awada will provide you with a consultation that includes a complete facial evaluation and help you determine what is required to achieve your desired look.
