Why Replace a Breast Implant?

Breast implant removal and replacement is requested for many reasons, including correction, cosmetic, medical, or lifestyle reasons. Women who have previously undergone breast enhancement surgery may find that their implants’ shape and feel have changed with time. Others may find that the results of their previous procedure did not achieve their goals. Some women may be experiencing medical issues from back pain to ruptured implants. Whatever the reason, Southfield’s Dr. Mariam Awada will help you to replace an unwanted implant with a new one that gives you a look and comfort level you were expecting in the first place.

Pairing a Breast Lift with a Replacement

With the advancement of time, older implants can cause the breast to lose its natural volume and elasticity. Skin aging results in stretched tissue, leaving the breasts sitting lower on your chest. When replacing older (or ruptured) breast implants, patients often consider a breast lift to add perkiness. A simple removal of implants may leave your breast looking saggy and deflated. With a lift, you can restore the volume and lift your aging breast tissue. When you consult with Dr. Mariam Awada, she will evaluate the condition of your implants. She will then advise if you will need removal and replacement with a lift.

Choosing Your Breast Replacement

When you decide the time is right to remove and replace your breast implant, it is essential to know what exactly you do not like about your current implants. Do they not feel natural? Is there rippling under your skin? Are they too big or small for your body type? Silicone, saline, and natural fat transfer augmentation all have different applications. When choosing the correct replacement that will meet your goals, Dr. Mariam Awada and her Southfield based team will help you understand each method’s benefits and limitations.

What Can You Expect From a Breast Implant Removal

For most women undergoing breast implant removal, the surgery and recovery will be very similar to when the implants were first inserted. An incision will be made during the surgery, typically on your existing scar around the areola or along the breast's crease. The implant is then removed and, if the patient has decided to replace the implant, the surgeon will insert a new one. Recovery time and the pain associated with it will generally be the same as the original surgery, with most women experiencing soreness for about a week. Exercising and conducting strenuous work should be put off for about six weeks to prevent shifting or rupture your breasts' stitches. Most women return to work within a week or two, provided their job responsibilities are not overly physical.

Replacing an Artificial Implant With a Natural Fat Transfer

For some women, especially those that have experienced a rupture of a silicone or saline implant, the idea of inserting a new artificial implant is not an option. However, many women also want to maintain the volume and shape their implants provided them. Luckily there is a natural solution for those that would like to forgo an artificial option. By harvesting the natural fat from problem areas around the butt, thighs, and belly, we can restore the shape your implant provided. The results are natural-looking and feeling breasts that do not carry the rupture risk that silicon and saline implants do. As an added bonus, the liposuction procedure helps sculpt other parts of your body, helping you achieve other body image goals.

Breast Implant Replacement FAQs

Why might I need a breast implant replacement surgery?
There are several reasons a breast implant replacement may be right for you. First, you may be experiencing a rupture from a previous implant operation. If this is the case, the old implant will need to be removed and replaced with a new one. You may also be unhappy with a previous procedure. Some women are unhappy with their implants’ size and opt to increase or decrease their size through a second procedure. Other women may have noticed displacement or rippling from their original implant and want to explore options that give them a more natural shape.
How much pain can I expect from my breast implant replacement?
You can expect a similar amount of pain as your first operation. Most women report mild to moderate discomfort for about a week and general soreness for a while after. A local or general anesthetic is used during the operation itself, so you will not experience any pain during your procedure. If you experience severe pain after your operation, call your doctor right away as this may be a sign of infections or other issues.
Will I need additional surgeries?
Additional surgeries may be required for augmentation patients. A breast lift may be necessary to add additional perkiness. Other surgeries may be needed if you face any complications during your breast implant replacement, like implant rupture or capsular contracture. Also, breast implants will age, just like any other body part. Some women choose to have additional operations to correct the results of gravity and aging in the future. During your consultation, you and your surgeon should discuss other procedures after or in conjunction with breast implant replacement.
How long will I have to wait until I can drive?
Driving and other upper-body movements should be restrained for at least one week after surgery to prevent implant shift.
Will the new implants affect my physical functioning? Can I lift heavy objects?
After the recovery phase, women will typically not experience a change to their physical mobility or ability to lift objects. Although, lifting any object heavier than five pounds should be avoided for six weeks.
How long until I can exercise after a breast implant replacement?
Exercising and strenuous activity should be paused for at least six weeks after your surgery. Not doing so adds a risk of implants shifting. Walking and other very low-intensity activities are permitted. Upper arm movements, like reaching, should be avoided for the first 1-2 weeks. Lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds should be avoided for six weeks after the operation.
When can I return to work?
If your position requires physical movement, such as lifting or reaching, it could mean that you cannot perform these activities for up to six weeks after your breast implant replacement surgery. Consult your doctor to understand better the specific limitations you can expect.
