Labiaplasty Surgery in Metro Detroit Michigan

Some of the first things you may notice are changes to your outward appearance, such as wrinkles or sagging on your face or neck. Because these are the most noticeable, you may overlook the other parts of your anatomy that are also impacted by age.

As you age, your skin becomes less elastic - from your head to your toes and everywhere in between. The decrease in your body’s production of collagen and elastin (vital proteins that keep skin youthful and smooth) make it harder for your skin to bounce back after damage, and the result is sagging and drooping skin, volume loss and wrinkles. While it is common (and encouraged) to treat aging skin on your face, it is important to remember the other areas of your body that, because they are less noticeable, may still need a bit of rejuvenation, including your genitals.

Talking about increased laxity in the skin of their labia and vaginal area can be an awkward and embarrassing topic, but you should know that you are not the only woman dealing with these issues. Nearly 12,000 women chose to undergo vaginal rejuvenation in 2016, which was close to 40 percent more than the previous year. At Michigan Cosmetic Surgery, we know that discussing your female and sexual health can be uncomfortable, but as a woman herself, Dr. Awada can address your concerns in a sensitive way - whether you have questions about the aesthetic appearance of your vagina, or are struggling with reduced function or discomfort.

What to Expect from Your Labiaplasty Procedure

Depending on the results you are looking for from your procedure, there are several techniques that can be used for a labiaplasty. The two most commonly performed include:

Edge Resection (Trim Method)

This technique is typically used if your goal is to reduce the length of your labia. Dr. Awada will trim away the excess skin along the length of your labia, then stitch it using very small sutures. It is a safe, simple outpatient procedure that offers minimal risk of complications. Most importantly, it will provide you with excellent results.

Wedge Method

This technique focuses on reducing excess bulk in your labia minora. Dr. Awada will remove a wedge-shaped piece of your labia minora and stitch the new edges back together, the goal of which is correcting your inner labia. This is also a safe and relatively simple outpatient procedure. A typical labiaplasty takes up to two hours, and is usually performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia paired with IV sedation.

Recovery and Healing from Labiaplasty Surgery

Despite being a surgical procedure, recovery following a Labiaplasty is not extensive, though there are some restrictions to ensure proper healing. Dr. Awada usually recommends taking a few days off of work, as you will probably experience some pain and swelling for the first week, but any discomfort you may have is temporary and can be relieved with ice and over-the-counter pain medications. It takes six weeks or more for all of the swelling to dissipate, but you will most likely be able to resume sexual intercourse around four to six weeks after your surgery.

Possible Risks or Complications

As with every surgical procedure, Labiaplasty carries some risks, but they are rare and extremely minimal. Most of your post-surgery side effects will be temporary, and usually include bruising, swelling, or light bleeding.

As every woman’s body is different, additional side effects or complications may include:

  • Infection
  • Over-resection
  • Asymmetrical results
  • Scarring
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of sensation
  • Pain during intercourse

Again, these side effects are uncommon, and Dr. Awada’s skill and experience will not only help to ensure beautiful results, but also a safe and comfortable procedure. If you experience discomfort, pain or embarrassment because of changes to your labia, a surgical Labiaplasty might be the answer to restoring both cosmetic appearance and function.
