Why Do I Need To Replace My Breast Implants?
Breast implants are manufactured, and much like anything else in the modern world, they will not last forever. After a while, the implants will deflate or rupture, causing them to lose their round shape and aesthetic appeal. The average deflation rate for breast implants is roughly 1% per year, which means in 10 years, your breasts will be 10% smaller than they are now. The factors listed above will play a role in determining how high your rupture rate is specifically, but you can expect to replace your implants in about 12 years.
Monitoring For Signs Of Leakage After Cosmetic Breast Surgery
Saline implants do not require any postoperative monitoring, but silicone implants may show signs of leakage. Perform a monthly self-breast exam, with annual or semi-annual mammograms as prescribed by your primary care physician. Get an MRI if necessary to check for possible leakage. We ask all patients with silicone implants to come in at least once a year for a follow-up exam. The FDA recommends getting an MRI three years after implantation, and then again every two years after that to screen for ruptures.
