Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder just what happened to your breasts? If you’re like many women, you may have had birthed and breastfed children, causing your breasts to sag. Or, many times, aging and plain old gravity can take a toll on our breasts. Maybe you’ve thought about a breast augmentation, however, you may have also wondered if a breast lift is a better solution for you. Here, we break down the difference.

What Exactly Is A Breast Lift?

Grown 70 percent since 2001, breast lifts are the choice many women are going with. Simply put, a breast lift, which is also known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes your breasts to provide a more youthful appearance. Oftentimes, breast lifts are a viable solution for women who have lost a significant amount of weight, have breast fed babies, have experienced sagging due to age or who don’t like the location of their areolas (for example, if they point downward or sideways). During a breast lift procedure, which can take two to three hours depending on the individual, Mariam Awada, MD, FACS will remove excess from the breast and tighten the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. You may opt for relocating of the areolas or even reshaping of them, as well. At the end of the procedure, your incisions will be sealed and you can begin the recovery process. However, it’s important to understand that breast lift surgery will not change the size of your breasts or provide more fullness in the upper part of your breast, as an augmentation would. If you are looking to increase the size of your breasts, a breast augmentation is the solution you would want to consider. As with a breast augmentation, a breast lift procedure will require the use of anesthesia, so someone will need to accompany you to and drive you home on the day of surgery.
