For many Michigan women, breast augmentation is something on their minds. Many of us aren’t born with the breasts we desire. Others have nursed children and are not happy with the way their breasts look as a result. And other women have undergone mastectomies due to breast cancer and have had one or both breasts removed, and are looking to rebuild their breasts with breast implants. Whether you’ve made the decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery in Michigan or you’re still considering it, do you know what actually happens during the procedure? Before committing to breast augmentation surgery, it is important be knowledgeable about the procedure itself. Your surgeon should be completely open, honest and thorough with you about the surgery and answer any and all questions you have. However, let’s take some of the mystery out of breast augmentation surgery right now.
Prior To Your Procedure
No worries you’re in good hands! As you are prepped for surgery, you will meet with Dr. Mariam Awada and her medical staff, and sign any required consents. You can also ask any questions that you may have at this time. We always takes the time to address our patient’s concerns. We will also discuss post-surgery treatment plans, including addressing any pain or nausea that may occur. If you like, “before” photos will be taken so that you can compare your breasts pre- and post-surgery. Then, the anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia, which is the final step before surgery begins. Keep in mind it is always a good idea to wear light, loose clothing to your appointment so that you can be as comfortable as possible afterwards. During your procedure From start to finish, the breast augmentation procedure generally takes one to two hours. Of course there can be exceptions, however, this is the general timeframe. Dr. Mariam Awada leads the surgery, and is accompanied by a team of medical staff who is also acutely familiar with your particular situation. Michigan Cosmetic Surgery is pleased to offer a surgical center on site, right in our Southfield, Michigan office for your convenience. The procedure will begin once anesthesia has taken effect. During your operation, we will clean the breasts and surrounding area. An incision will be made either under the breast (this is the most common area for incision), under the arm, around the nipple area or, for those who have had a mastectomy, in the current scar area. Next, Dr. Mariam Awada will place the implant (either silicone or saline, whichever you’ve chosen) through the incision using the latest state-of-the-art tools to ensure its proper placement. The implant will go either in front of or behind the muscle of the breast (which is determined on an individual basis). She will then close the incision with sutures and post-operative compression bandages will be applied. Once you are awakened from surgery, the doctor will discuss specific instructions on breast care post-surgery, as well as schedule a follow up appointment to check your healing progress. Most women are able to return to work or a normal, everyday schedule within 7-10 days, though swelling and soreness is common for several weeks. Be sure to bring along a spouse, family member or friend for support and to drive you home, as you will not be allowed to operate a vehicle after surgery.
