Humans are naturally hairy creatures, but it’s far more socially acceptable for men to be hairy than it is for women. Because of this, many women look for ways to get rid of unwanted body hair so they can show off their smooth, silky skin. Some methods are more effective and longer lasting than others, so you can choose the option that best suits your needs. Here’s a look at some of the many methods for eliminating unwanted facial hair and body hair.
Shaving
Shaving is the go-to method for unwanted hair removal because it is cheap, quick, and easy. Unfortunately, hair regrows within a few days, which means that you have to shave time and time again to keep your skin looking smooth. If you choose to shave your legs, armpits, or other body parts, be sure to wash your skin before lathering on shaving lotion. Use lukewarm water with a clean blade to minimize the risk of infection. Shave in the opposite direction of hair growth. This will allow the razor to cut the hair at the base, leaving you with less stubble and better results. Rinse with cool water and dab lightly with a towel to dry. Immediately apply hydrating lotion to minimize shaving bumps, also known as folliculitis.
Waxing
Waxing is a longer-lasting option than shaving because it pulls the hair from the root. Wax strips are applied to the surface of the skin, and the wax grabs onto each strand of hair. When the strip is pulled off, the force is strong enough to remove the hair and the hair follicle, leaving a smooth surface behind. With this in mind, waxing does not destroy the hair follicle completely like laser hair removal does. Thus it is not a permanent solution for unwanted hair, but it does offer a much longer frame of time in between shaving. You may choose to use an at-home waxing kit or visit and aesthetician for professional waxing. The time in between waxing will vary based on the effectiveness of the wax and your personal hair growth, but most people can go 3-6 weeks between waxes. To minimize redness and bumps, clean the area you plan to wax before and after the procedure. Place a cold compress and moisturizer on the area after the waxing is complete. Lotions with Aloe Vera help sooth irritation. Continue to Part 2
