I Want a Breast Augmentation…But I’m Afraid It Will Hurt

In today’s day and age of medical and technology advancements, people are more empowered than ever to make the decisions that are right for their own bodies and lives. As such, the demand for plastic surgery in Michigan and across the globe continues to grow exponentially. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery indicates that 15.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2014, with breast augmentation remaining one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery to this day. Why? It’s simple. Most women are not born with the breasts they desire, or age, breastfeeding and gravity have taken a toll. Breasts are a symbol of femininity. And when you don’t feel confident in (or out of) your clothing, it can take a toll on self-confidence. Fortunately, there’s something that can be done. However, it’s only natural to feel some amount of anxiety about getting a breast augmentation.

Easing The Fear Of Pain

Despite breast augmentation surgery becoming ever-increasingly popular among women of all ages, many women are hesitant to pursue this life-changing procedure due to fear of the unknown. One of those fears, and one we hear at Michigan Cosmetic Surgery often, is the fear of pain that can come after a breast augmentation. Let’s be honest: no one likes being in pain. However, it’s important to understand that we do all that we can to ensure you are comfortable throughout your procedure and recovery. Rest assured that we will discuss all pain-management options and recommendations with you prior to your procedure. On the day of surgery, we give patients medication by mouth that will help decrease the need for narcotic pain medication after surgery. We also use a long-lasting local anesthesia at the surgical site to control pain even more. We may also use anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing drugs in combination with the aforementioned. Though we can and do prescribe narcotic pain medication for use after surgery, some patients do not feel the need to take it and opt for an over-the-counter pain relieving medication. Generally speaking, those patients who decide to have larger implants put in may experience slightly more pain than those who choose a smaller implant. However, the vast majority of the time, we find that patients are pleasantly surprised that the pain they experience is far less that what they imagined. In order to minimize pain after surgery, you shouldn’t perform any sort of exercises involving the pectoral muscles two weeks prior to surgery. Also, be advised that no heavy lifting is allowed for several weeks after a breast augmentation. While a certain amount of discomfort can be expected, most patients feel well within a week…some even within days. It is important to note, though, that everyone’s pain tolerance varies.
