More Breast Augmentation Misconceptions

breast augmentation misconceptions

Although breast augmentation in Michigan and across the globe is becoming more commonplace than ever — breast implants were the top plastic surgery procedure in 2015 — there’s still quite a bit of misinformation out there when it comes to having a breast augmentation. These misconceptions, unfortunately, can make some women shun the idea of considering breast implants, even though the procedure can truly be life changing for them. The fact of the matter is that a breast augmentation procedure is safer and more attainable than ever and yields highly satisfying results for patients, including a better body image and higher self-confidence. If you’re a woman considering breast implants in southeast Michigan, we’d like to address three common misconceptions.

You Can’t Breastfeed With Breast Implants

Breastfeeding is a common concern among our younger patients who still plan on having children. Many women believe that if they have breast implants that they cannot breastfeed in the future. Typically, if the implant incision is made under the breast or in the armpit region, there will be no issues when it comes to breastfeeding. Further, studies show that breast feeding with implants does not contribute to future breast sagging or damage of implants.

I Don’t Want Large Breasts, So I Am Not A Candidate

This is a frequent misconception among women considering breast augmentation. But the truth is that many women who come to us simply want their breasts to go back where they belong! Gravity, breast feeding and genetics can play a role in droopy, lifeless breasts — regardless of age. Many young women who’ve never breastfed even have saggy breasts. Breast augmentation isn’t always about attaining extremely large breasts. In fact, most patients simply want natural looking implants that will help them to feel better in their clothing. Sizing options and recommendations will help you decide on an implant that is right for you…from relatively small to something on the larger end.

I’ll Have To Replace My Implants Each Decade

Though breast implants sometimes need to be replaced if an issue arises, it is not always necessary to replace them every 10 years. Some women even go 20 years (or a lifetime!) without needing to replace their implants. While every situation is unique, only about 20 percent of women will have to get their implants replaced within 10 years of the original surgery.
