Properly Caring for Your Breast Implants: Three Tips

So you’ve gotten your breast augmentation…congratulations! Hopefully by now you are getting used to — and loving — your new look. With breast augmentation procedures nearly tripling since the late 90s, and with almost 300,000 breast augmentations performed in 2014, it’s safe to say that breast implants are becoming more and more common right here in Michigan and around the globe. However, surgery of any kind is nothing to be taken lightly. Nor is the aftercare. To ensure your breast implants heal properly, follow these three tips.

Stay Supported

Supporting your breasts after breast augmentation surgery is essential. Since your breasts will likely be heavier after your procedure, extra support can help preserve the shape of your breasts (the exception is if we are interested in getting the implant to drop a bit). Wearing a highly supportive, elastic sports bra is a good choice for at least the first week following your breast augmentation. After that, any bra that fits comfortably is acceptable. You may wish to wait on investing in an entirely new bra collection for two to three months after your breast augmentation, once your breasts have settled in completely.

Massage Daily

In many cases, daily massage is helpful in moving the implant so that the breast can, ultimately, feel soft and natural. Gently massaging the implant up, down and to either side several times a day is recommended to ensure the implant moves naturally like breast tissue would. Rest assured that we will instruct you on whether or not you should be massaging your breasts, as well as the proper way to perform breast massage.

Rest – Doctor’s Orders

It is key to get proper rest and relaxation in the days following your breast augmentation. After all, any surgery needs adequate time to heal. It’s likely your energy level will be lower than normal for two to three days following your procedure. Allowing yourself the proper rest and recovery time will help you to heal optimally. (And be sure to sleep on your back for six weeks after your breast augmentation to prevent any deformation to the implant.)
