Now that autumn is upon us, you may be noticing that all the working out you did this summer has started to pay off. You feel stronger, look leaner, and are proud of the goals you’ve accomplished. However, you might also notice that there are a couple of places on your body that haven’t gotten the “smooth and slim” memo, and refuse to budge. In the past, you either had to accept that those lumps and bumps were just going to hang around, or you had to undergo a more invasive liposuction procedure.
But now, as cosmetic treatments advance in both technology and availability, you can get rid of unsightly fat with a fast, nonsurgical treatment like CoolSculpting. At Michigan Plastic Surgery, we offer CoolSculpting for our patients who wish to achieve a slimmer body contour without surgery.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting is an innovative, non-invasive solution to smoothing out those problem areas. The science behind CoolSculpting is known as cryolipolysis, which uses freezing temperatures to destroy unwanted fat cells. The procedure uses controlled cooling that precisely freezes only the cells targeted for elimination – there is no damage to your skin or any surrounding tissues.
When you come in for your CoolSculpting session, a gel pad is placed on the skin for extra protection over the areas Dr. Awada has marked for treatment. The hollow-tipped vacuum applicators are then placed over the pads – the applicators come in several different sizes and curvatures to help them better target the area you’ve chosen for treatment – and the unwanted bulge is sucked into the tip of the applicator. The temperature begins to drop, numbing the area. You may feel some tugging on the tissue at first due to the suction, but this goes away as the area becomes numb. Once the fat cells have been frozen, they crystallize, die off, and are processed and then eliminated naturally by your body. Once your session is completed, the applicators are removed, and often, the treatment area is massaged. The results of CoolSculpting depend on the speed of your body’s natural processes, so you won’t see your final results immediately – it usually takes between three and six months for your body to eliminate the affected fat cells completely.
Get Your Body In Shape In Time For The Holidays
Depending on how many sessions Dr. Awada has recommended, you may see some results in as little as three weeks following your initial treatment. However, the most dramatic and noticeable results aren’t typically visible until one to three months post-procedure – just in time to show off your smoother curves at a holiday party.
The CoolSculpting procedure actually eliminates about 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells in the targeted treatment area (instead of just shrinking them). This means they’re gone forever, and as long as you maintain a healthy weight, those unsightly bulges will stay gone. CoolSculpting is a body contouring device, not a method of weight loss, so you may not notice a change in the numbers on the scale, but you will look slimmer and see a difference in how your clothes fit. Your body will continue to flush out the dead fat cells for up to six months after your treatment.
A Fast Treatment With No Downtime
CoolSculpting is virtually painless, and only takes about an hour, depending on the size and number of areas you have decided to treat. Once it’s complete, this treatment requires no downtime, meaning that you could come in during your lunch hour and return to work with no one being the wiser. There are a few temporary side effects, including redness, swelling, bruising, or other skin sensitivities, but this is normal, and typically resolves within a few days.
