Before & After Breast Augmentation

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts. It typically involves the placement of implants—either saline or silicone—or fat transfer to increase breast volume and improve symmetry. Many individuals choose breast augmentation to restore breast volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss, to achieve a more balanced figure, or simply to boost their self-confidence. The procedure is customized to each patient’s goals and anatomy and is expertly performed by Dr. Awada, a board-certified plastic surgeon, to ensure natural-looking results and optimal safety. Recovery times vary, but most patients return to normal activities within a few weeks.

Am I A Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you:

  • Want fuller, shapelier, and more proportionate breasts
  • Have asymmetrical or uneven breast volume
  • Noticed a decrease in breast size after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Are in good physical and emotional health
  • Have no medical conditions that could interfere with healing
  • Understand the risks, benefits, and limitations of surgery
  • Have realistic expectations and a desire for aesthetic enhancement—not perfection

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

There are a number of reasons why women may choose to have breast augmentation. The primary benefit is that breast augmentation increases breast volume.

Breast augmentation can help women who have lost volume regain their former physique. Breast augmentation can also be used to correct issues with asymmetry.

The Initial Consultation

When you choose Dr. Mariam Awada and the team at Michigan Cosmetic Surgery for your breast augmentation, your journey begins with a complimentary virtual consultation with one of our knowledgeable surgical patient coordinators, personally trained by Dr. Awada. During this initial conversation, they will answer your questions, discuss your goals, and provide a personalized quote. From there, you’ll be invited to schedule your in-person consultation with Dr. Awada, where she will review your medical history and take the time to truly understand your vision, ensuring your treatment plan aligns with your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.

What Should I Do in Preparation?

During the consultation process, our team will help you select the best implants for your body type, even allowing you to “try on” different implant types with in-office sizers. Additionally, we will share any specific directions for preparing for the surgery. This may involve going off of any medications that would cause bleeding. We also ask patients to cease smoking several weeks before their scheduled surgery date.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The duration of your surgery can vary, just depending on the type of incision and on any additional procedures you are having done. For breast augmentation alone, the procedure usually doesn’t exceed two hours.

What is Surgery Like?

It is perfectly natural to be a bit apprehensive about the surgery itself, especially if you have never had surgery before. Here at Michigan Cosmetic Surgery, patient comfort and safety are our primary goals. We provide full anesthesia options so that you are “out” for your breast augmentation and do not experience any pain or discomfort.

Once you are under, Dr. Mariam Awada will make small incisions under the muscle, usually in the areola or under the breast, then insert the implants and move them into position. Breast augmentation patients may also opt for a breast lift or a crescent lift, which involves the breast tissue being reduced to assure that the appearance is symmetric and proportioned well.

What Kind of Recovery Process Can I Expect?

While it may take up to six weeks for you to fully recover, most women feel ready to return to school or work after about one full week. You can expect some soreness and tenderness during the first few days, but it is easily managed with medications.

Will I Have Scars from the Procedure?

Breast augmentation may leave you with light scars. A skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon will minimize the size of your incisions and make certain the scars are hidden as carefully as possible.

Furthermore, you can minimize scarring by following all of your surgeon’s aftercare instructions. Most women find that their final scarring is minor. Dr. Beauty scar treatments are also included in your final surgical quote. After 6 weeks, you will be able to come back into the office to begin scar treatments.

How Long do the Results Last?

One of the benefits of breast augmentation is that the results can be long-lasting. Depending on the type of implants you get, you may find that your results last for 10 to 20 years before they need to be replaced, and in some cases, even longer. Complications may force you to replace your implants sooner than that, but these complications are fairly uncommon.

Types of Breast Implants

Silicone Breast Implants

As you pursue breast augmentation, one of the most important decisions you will make is which type of breast implants to choose. One option is to get implants made from silicone, a synthetic material that replicates the feel of human fat. Silicone implants are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and firmness levels.

There are pros and cons to choosing this type of implant. The greatest advantage to silicone breast implants is that, according to most patients, they feel more realistic and natural. The downside is that they come with higher risks of rupture. You must be 22 or older to get silicone implants.

Saline Gel Breast Implants

As an alternative to silicone breast implants, some women choose saline gel implants. These implants often have an outer shell made from silicone, but the inside is filled with sterilized saline water.

Some patients dislike the look of these implants, as they can cause a “rippling” effect that is visible through the skin. Saline implants often feel firmer than natural breast tissue, which some patients may like and others may not. The big advantage of saline gel implants is that they require smaller incisions, which means they tend to produce smaller scars. You must be at least 18 to get saline implants.

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

Some women wish to increase the size of their breasts, but are uncomfortable with the idea of implanting any kind of foreign or artificial object in their bodies. Often, these patients are eligible for breast augmentation via fat transfer. This method involves Dr. Mariam Awada harvesting unwanted fat deposits from elsewhere on your body and using them to add volume to your breasts. It is important to note that, following a fat graft, there tends to be a loss in overall fat volume; in other words, this approach is best for women seeking a small increase in the size of their breasts.

Risks and Considerations of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a safe and widely performed procedure, especially when done by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mariam Awada. While rare, potential risks include infection, changes in sensation, scarring, or implant shifting. Choosing an experienced surgeon significantly reduces these risks.

Implants are durable but not permanent. They typically last 10–20 years, though many patients keep them longer. Replacement may be needed due to rupture, scar tissue, or a change in aesthetic goals. Dr. Awada provides long-term follow-up care to monitor your results.

Ruptures are uncommon. Saline implants deflate visibly, while silicone ruptures may require imaging to detect. Both are safely replaceable.

Breast Implant Illness (BII) is extremely rare and not officially recognized but involves symptoms like fatigue or joint pain. Dr. Awada takes these concerns seriously and prioritizes patient safety.

A rare cancer, BIA-ALCL, has been linked to textured implants—not the smooth ones Dr. Awada uses. The risk is extremely low and treatable when detected early. Dr. Awada is committed to clear communication, informed decisions, and natural-looking results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

How long do breast implants last?

Breast implants are long-lasting but not considered lifetime devices. On average, they last 10–20 years, though many patients enjoy their results much longer. Implants may eventually need to be replaced due to natural aging, lifestyle changes, or rare complications such as rupture or capsular contracture.

What is the best age for breast augmentation?

There is no single “best age.” Most women choose breast augmentation in their 20s, 30s, or 40s, once breast development is complete. The ideal timing depends on your goals, health, and whether you plan to have children, as pregnancy can change breast shape.

Will my nipple sensation or feeling change?

Some women notice temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation after surgery. In most cases, sensation returns to normal within several months, though rarely, changes can be long-term. Your surgeon will use techniques that help preserve normal sensitivity whenever possible.

Can I breast feed after breast augmentation?

Yes, most women are still able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. The ability to breastfeed depends on your individual anatomy and the type of surgery performed, but implants do not generally interfere with milk production or safety.

Will insurance cover the procedure?

No. Michigan Cosmetic Surgery does not accept insurance for breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedures, as these are considered elective treatments.
