What is Kybella®?
Kybella is an injectable treatment designed to reduce or completely eliminate excess fat under your chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is a molecule that is found naturally in the human body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. The deoxycholic acid used in Kybella is a synthetic, non-animal derived form of the molecule, and when injected into the fat under your chin, can noticeably reduce your submental fullness. It works by damaging the membranes of the fat cells in the targeted area, causing them to die off and be metabolized by your body. Once the cells have been processed by your metabolism, your body excretes them naturally, and your double chin is no more. Since Kybella permanently destroys the existing fat cells under your chin, they are no longer able to store or accumulate fat, which offers you lasting results. Keep in mind, however, that if you gain weight, new fat cells can be generated and settle underneath your chin, so sustaining a healthy weight is vital to maintaining your streamlined jaw.

Treatment, Side Effects, and Results
At your initial consultation to determine if Kybella is the right treatment for you, Dr. Awada or her nurse injectors will examine you and create a personalized treatment plan that includes the number of Kybella treatments you will need to see optimal results. Some people see the results they want after three sessions, while for others, it may take up to six. Each session is scheduled about four weeks apart, in order to give your body time to process the fat cells.
At your Kybella treatment session, the injection points will be marked on the skin under your chin; depending on the severity of your submental fat, there may be up to 50 injection sites. The injection process itself is a non-invasive, non-surgical, virtually painless treatment that typically takes about 15-20 minutes.
Side effects, if any, are minimal and may include some mild bruising, pain, or redness, and the injection points in the treatment area may initially feel hard. These are normal, temporary effects, and will resolve on their own. You will most likely notice swelling that may increase overnight, but this is also normal and should subside within about 48 hours. Ice and compression help to ease any discomfort, and Dr. Awada will advise you on caring for the treatment area after your procedure. Initial results will be visible in two to three weeks, once the swelling has completely subsided and the body is able to metabolize the dead fat cells.
